I have crossed oceans before
But always by plane.
Never before have I ridden
The steady tack of line and
Sheet, the bow spontaneous
As it dips into foam,
The silver plunging through
Velvet darkness springing upward
Like waves drawn over my
Eyes, is my body falling
Backward toward earth
Then the force of buoyancy
Should keep us always
Afloat yet ever sinking,
Uplifted in dream,
We two burst instead
As if into one body
Propelled forward on a
Course charted by both
Planet and each milky
Point of starlight, full tilt
Through air, through water,
Through salt and through
Wonder, the prow streaks
Toward the break of
New day, a suddenly
Brilliant horizon.
